The Sustainability Show in London put Hurtigruten in front of an audience that treats a claim as something to be checked. The commercial problem for any cruise operator at a sustainability show is credibility. The product is a ship. The booth cannot resolve that, but it can avoid adding to it, and it can be built from material that belongs to the story the brand is telling rather than material chosen because it was cheap and available. The brief was a booth produced and installed locally, from materials with a traceable origin.
The floor is the point. ECONYL flooring, made from 100% regenerated nylon, with discarded fishing nets among the waste streams it is recovered from. An expedition cruise line stood on a floor made from fishing gear pulled out of the sea. It is the rare case where the specification and the brand are the same argument. Above the floor, the build mixed recycled sheet material with hire. Solid surfaces were Polygood, 100% recycled and recyclable plastic sheet. Structure was FSC timber and steel. Light-transmitting and signage elements were Greencast recycled cast acrylic. Shelving was reclaimed wood, left as it came rather than clad or painted over. Paint, where used, was VOC free. Furniture and plants were hired. The whole thing was produced and installed by a local team within 20 miles, which removes long-distance freight and the crew travel that goes with it, and means a strike crew is an hour away rather than a day.
The 20 mile radius is the constraint and it was chosen, not imposed. Local production means working with whoever is inside the circle, on their stock, their lead times and their capability, rather than specifying freely and freighting the result in. It closes off materials and suppliers that would otherwise be available. What it buys is freight removed, crew travel removed, and a team that can be back on site the same day.
This project was not carbon measured. There is no total CO2e figure, no footprint in square metres and no waste tonnage in the record, and none is published here. What is recorded: zero waste to landfill, and production and installation carried out by a local team within 20 miles. That is the honest extent of it. The absence is worth stating plainly rather than filling with a percentage, because a page claiming a figure here would be claiming harder than the report behind it.
