The brief

The previous booth was a custom build, largely thrown away at the end of the show, and only 24.92% of it was easily recyclable or natural. Pernod Ricard asked for a booth that could be stored in region and rebuilt for several years, and that would stand up to questions about waste from customers and from the group's own sustainability team. The commercial reason is repeat cost. A booth that is rebuilt is bought once. A booth that is scrapped is bought every year, with the freight and the disposal bill on top.

What we made

A bolted aluminium frame carrying interchangeable infill panels. The frame is the asset: it comes apart to component lengths, stores in region and is rebuilt, which is what makes the multi-year comparison possible. Surfaces are a recycled bamboo composite pressed from reclaimed wood chips and bamboo fibre, with the fibre sourced in south east Asia rather than freighted in. Structural infill is FSC plywood. Graphics are printed on FSC certified cardboard, fully recyclable and specified with zero plastic, so no lamination, no vinyl and no mounting adhesive. The bar is recycled glass, collected and manufactured in Singapore. Flooring is linoleum, Cradle to Cradle Silver certified, 98% natural materials of which 78% renewable, and fully recyclable. Living plants are used as dressing rather than artificial foliage. Over 60% of suppliers are located in Singapore, which cuts the freight leg and keeps the refit local.

The hard part

Cardboard graphics with zero plastic mean no laminate. No laminate means no moisture barrier, in a city where humidity sits high and show halls move air hard. It also means the graphic is the consumable while the frame is the asset, because print changes with the portfolio every year. The build separates the two deliberately: frame, composite and plywood stored and refitted, cardboard recycled and reprinted.

The numbers

No absolute carbon total was published for this booth, so there is no kg CO2e figure to quote. What was published is relative. The build is 100% easily recyclable or natural materials, against 24.92% for the booth it replaced. Modelled over three years of use it is a 32% reduction in CO2e against business as usual, meaning a custom booth built and scrapped each year. Over five years the reduction is more than 58%, because the frame is bought once and the saving compounds. Reuse avoids over four tonnes of single use non-recyclable material going to landfill each year on the same comparison. Zero waste went to landfill or incineration. Indicative, calculated in house, not independently audited.
